Maths Exam Writing Tips
How to write Mathematics answers in the BSE AP SSC public exam to score maximum marks — proofs, word problems, statistics, and the Section IV long-answer strategy.
AP SSC Maths Paper Structure
Overview- 1100 marks · 3 hours 15 minutes (15 min reading time) · 4 Sections · 33 questions
- 2Section I: 12 × 1 = 12 marks (objective/one-word answers — attempt all)
- 3Section II: short answer (2 marks each) — show working in 2–3 lines
- 4Section III: medium answer (4 marks each) — show all steps clearly
- 5Section IV: long answer (8 marks each, internal choice) — read both options before attempting
Proofs and Theorems
4–8 marks- 1State what is Given and what is To Prove as separate labelled lines at the top
- 2Draw a neat, labelled diagram — you lose marks without it for geometry theorems
- 3Write each step with a reason in brackets: 'AB = CD (given)' or 'using BPT...'
- 4For Pythagoras, BPT, tangent theorems: the diagram counts for 1–2 marks alone
- 5End with 'Hence proved' or 'Therefore, [restate the statement]'
Word Problems
3–8 marks- 1Read twice — identify what is given (known values) and what is asked (the unknown)
- 2Define variables: write 'Let x = ...' clearly before forming the equation
- 3Form the equation step by step — do not jump from problem statement to answer
- 4Solve and verify — substituting the answer back takes 30 seconds and can earn method marks
- 5Write a sentence answer: 'Therefore, the number of students = 24'
Trigonometry Problems
4–8 marks- 1Draw a right triangle for all trig problems — label the given angle, sides, and hypotenuse
- 2For height-and-distance: draw the figure with angle of elevation/depression BEFORE writing equations
- 3Write the identity before applying: 'Using sin²θ + cos²θ = 1...'
- 4Do not skip substitution — write formula → substitute values → simplify step by step
- 5Check units: if height is in metres, distance must also be in metres
Statistics (Mean / Median / Mode)
4–8 marks- 1Draw a complete frequency table: class interval | frequency | midpoint | fx | cf (cumulative frequency)
- 2For mean: show Σf and Σfx clearly — the summary row earns marks on its own
- 3For median: identify n/2, locate the median class from cumulative frequency, then apply formula
- 4For mode: state the modal class (highest frequency) before substituting into mode formula
- 5Box your final answer: 'Mean = ...', 'Median = ...', 'Mode = ...'
Section IV — 8-Mark Long Answers
8 marks- 1Read both internal choice options (A and B) before deciding — choose the one you know better
- 28-mark answers need 6–8 clear steps or points — plan briefly on rough paper first
- 3For algebra proofs (irrational numbers, factorisation): every line of logic earns marks
- 4For coordinate geometry / mensuration: set up the formula, show substitution, simplify step by step
- 5If you run out of time: write the formula and partially substitute — partial marks are awarded
