Internal Assessment contributes 20 marks to your CBSE score and is decided entirely by your school. Here is how to maximise every component before board season starts.

In CBSE Class 10 and 12, the final score is Theory (80 marks) + Internal Assessment (20 marks). Most students focus entirely on theory and treat IA as automatic. It is not.

Class 10 Internal Assessment Components

ComponentMarksWhen Evaluated
Periodic Tests (best of 2 out of 3)10Throughout the year
Notebook Submission5At the time of test
Subject Enrichment Activity5Assigned by teacher (lab, project, map work)

How to Score 20/20 Consistently

  • Appear for all 3 Periodic Tests — missing = 0 for that test
  • Maintain clean, updated notebooks — submit on time at every test
  • Ask your teacher what the Subject Enrichment Activity is — then do it properly
  • For Science: lab work must be completed before IA evaluation date
  • For Maths: project/activity must have aim, procedure, observations, and conclusion

Common IA Mistakes

  • Missing a Periodic Test and not applying for re-test
  • Submitting notebooks with blank pages
  • Not completing the assigned activity and hoping marks are given anyway

Tip

20 IA marks = 20 board exam marks. Getting 18/20 in IA means your theory paper only needs 70% to reach 88/100. IA marks are the lowest-hanging fruit in CBSE board preparation.
