Every CBSE student is told to solve sample papers and PYQs. But few know which to use first, how to use them, and what the difference actually is.
Key Differences
| Factor | Sample Papers | Previous Year Papers |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Released by CBSE each year (October) | Actual board papers from past years |
| Purpose | Shows the pattern for the upcoming exam | Shows what was actually tested |
| When to use | First — to understand format | After — to test knowledge depth |
The Correct Sequence
- 1.Study all chapters from NCERT
- 2.Solve current year CBSE Sample Paper — understand the exact format
- 3.Solve PYQs from last 5 years — identify which topics repeat most
- 4.Use repeat topics to prioritise remaining revision
- 5.Solve 2-3 more full papers under timed conditions before the exam
What PYQs Tell You
- Which chapters have repeat questions year after year
- Exact phrasing CBSE uses for questions
- Topics NOT asked recently (likely due soon)
Tip
PYQ chapters with 3+ repeat appearances in 10 years are almost guaranteed. For Maths: integration by parts, Heights and Distances, Probability. For Physics: optics ray diagrams, Kirchhoff laws. Prioritise these.
