CBSE Class 12 Chemistry — preparation strategy for all three parts
Understanding the three-part structure
CBSE Class 12 Chemistry is divided into Physical Chemistry (Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics — approximately 23 marks), Inorganic Chemistry (d-block elements, Coordination Compounds — approximately 19 marks), and Organic Chemistry (Haloalkanes, Alcohols, Aldehydes/Ketones, Amines, Biomolecules — approximately 28 marks).
Each part requires a different approach. Physical Chemistry rewards formula application and numerical practice. Inorganic Chemistry rewards memory and trend recognition. Organic Chemistry rewards reaction mechanism understanding and systematic named-reaction recall.
Physical Chemistry — formulas and numericals
Solutions, Electrochemistry, and Chemical Kinetics together carry 23 marks. Each chapter has 4–6 key formulas that appear in numericals every year. In Solutions: colligative property formulas (ΔTb = Kb × m, π = iMRT) appear in every paper. In Electrochemistry: Nernst equation and Faraday's law numericals are perennial.
Chemical Kinetics: integrated rate laws, Arrhenius equation, and half-life calculations appear consistently. Build a formula card for each Physical Chemistry chapter and practise numericals until formula substitution is automatic.
Inorganic Chemistry — d-block and Coordination Compounds
d and f Block Elements and Coordination Compounds together carry approximately 19 marks and are the most memory-intensive chapters in Class 12 Chemistry. For d-block: know the colour, magnetic properties, and oxidation states of common transition metal compounds. For Coordination Compounds: IUPAC naming, VBT hybridisation, crystal field theory (CFT), and isomerism.
These chapters reward consistent daily revision over intensive last-minute study. Flashcards for coordination compound nomenclature and properties are more effective than re-reading the chapter.
Organic Chemistry — name reactions are the key
Organic Chemistry carries the highest marks in Class 12 Chemistry. The CBSE paper consistently tests named reactions: SN1 and SN2 mechanisms, Williamson synthesis, Reimer-Tiemann reaction, Aldol condensation, Cannizzaro reaction, Hoffmann bromamide, Sandmeyer reaction, and Gabriel synthesis are the most frequently tested.
For each named reaction: know the reactants, reagents, conditions, and product. CBSE expects you to write the complete reaction with structural formula — partial answers lose marks. Build a named reaction summary sheet and revise it weekly from August onwards.
Starting in August — the Chemistry timeline
August: Solutions and Electrochemistry (Physical Chemistry foundation). September: Chemical Kinetics and d-block Elements. October: Coordination Compounds and Haloalkanes. November: Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers, Aldehydes, Ketones. December: Amines, Biomolecules, and Organic revision.
From January: full paper practice and systematic revision of named reactions and Inorganic properties. Chemistry improves most in the final 2 months — students who have the basics covered by December see significant score jumps in January.

How to prepare Organic Chemistry for CBSE Class 12?
Learn the named reactions first — write each one (reactant → reagent/condition → product) on a separate card. Then understand the mechanism for SN1, SN2, and Aldol condensation. Practise converting one functional group to another (conversion problems). Finally, solve chapter-wise PYQs to see exactly how CBSE tests each reaction.
