CBSE Class 12 Maths. Start strong. Score high.
Class 12 Maths is the most marks-scoring subject for PCM students — and the most avoidable source of lost marks. Here's exactly what to prioritise, how to practise, and how to build the consistency that takes you from 70 to 90+.
CBSE Class 12 Maths — chapter priorities, preparation strategy, and exam tips
Which chapters carry the most marks
CBSE Class 12 Maths has 13 chapters but marks are not distributed equally. Calculus — Integrals, Application of Integrals, and Differential Equations — consistently accounts for 35–40 marks across 10 years of papers. Vectors and 3D Geometry together carry 14–17 marks. These two areas alone cover more than half the paper.
Probability (13 marks), Matrices and Determinants (10 marks), and Relations and Functions (8 marks) make up most of the remaining marks. Linear Programming (5 marks) and Application of Derivatives (8 marks) are predictable scorers once the method is clear.
Integration — the chapter that decides your score
Integration carries the highest marks of any single topic in Class 12 Maths and is also where most students lose the most marks. The reason: it requires recognising which method to apply — substitution, parts, partial fractions — before you begin the question.
Start with standard formulae (at least 20 must be memorised cold). Then practise integration by parts with the ILATE rule until method selection is automatic. CBSE asks 5–8 marks of integration in almost every paper — this is where consistent practice converts directly into marks.
3D Geometry and Vectors — predictable and scorable
Vectors and Three Dimensional Geometry together appear as 5 questions worth 14–17 marks in every Class 12 Maths paper. The question types are highly predictable: angle between lines, distance of a point from a plane, shortest distance between skew lines, and equation of a line or plane given conditions.
These topics reward formula mastery and method recognition more than conceptual depth. Build a formula sheet for Vectors and 3D covering dot product, cross product, plane equations, and direction cosines — and practise the standard question types from previous year papers until the steps are automatic.
How to practise Maths for CBSE — the right method
Work chapter by chapter first. Take all integration questions from 10 years of Class 12 Maths PYQs and solve them in sequence. You will see that the same question structures repeat with different functions — once you recognise the structure, you can answer any variation.
Write steps in full. CBSE awards step marks — a correct method with a wrong final answer still earns most of the marks. A correct answer with no shown steps earns zero for the steps. The habit of writing complete working must be built during practice, not discovered in the exam hall.
Starting in August — what to cover first
August is the ideal time to build Maths fundamentals before the exam pressure sets in. Start with Relations and Functions and Inverse Trigonometry — short chapters, manageable, and guaranteed marks. Move to Matrices and Determinants, then begin Calculus from Continuity and Differentiability.
Aim to complete the Calculus block (Chapters 5–9) by November so you have December onwards for Vectors, 3D, Probability, and full paper practice. One chapter per week in August and September puts you exactly on track.

Frequently asked questions
Which chapters are most important for CBSE Class 12 Maths?
Integrals, Differential Equations, Vectors, Three Dimensional Geometry, and Probability together carry 55–65 marks out of 80. These five areas are the highest priority. Matrices and Determinants (10 marks) and Application of Derivatives (8 marks) are the next tier. Inverse Trigonometry and Linear Programming are shorter chapters worth 5–8 marks each.
Is CBSE Class 12 Maths hard?
It is extensive rather than conceptually deep. The syllabus is large — 13 chapters — but most question types in the CBSE paper are predictable if you have practised previous year papers. Students who score above 90% consistently report that regular practice, not exceptional intelligence, was the difference.
How many hours should I study Maths for Class 12?
1–1.5 hours of dedicated Maths practice daily from August to December is sufficient to build strong coverage. In January and February, increase to 2+ hours with a focus on full paper practice and revision of weaker chapters. Consistency matters more than session length.
How do I score 95+ in CBSE Class 12 Maths?
Master the high-weight chapters (Calculus, Vectors, Probability), practise the official CBSE sample paper and 5 previous year papers under timed conditions, and build the habit of showing complete working for every step. Scores above 95 come from consistently not losing step marks — that habit is built through practice, not last-minute revision.
What is the best way to revise Class 12 Maths before boards?
In the final 6 weeks: solve 3 full papers under 3-hour exam conditions. For revision, use chapter-wise formula sheets for Calculus, Vectors, and Probability — review them daily. Drill the question types where you dropped marks. Do not start new chapters in this phase.
