Start with the official CBSE sample paper, not your textbook
Most students open their textbook on day one and start reading Chapter 1. The better starting point is the official CBSE sample paper for Class 12 — it shows you exactly what the exam looks like: question types, marks distribution, and expected answer format.
Once you understand what you are being tested on, chapter preparation becomes purposeful. You study for the paper you will sit, not an imaginary one.
Build a subject-wise plan around the marks distribution
Every CBSE Class 12 subject has a marks-per-unit breakdown published in the syllabus. Identify it before you build your study schedule.
Science stream (PCM/PCB): Physics and Chemistry have predictable high-weight chapters — identify them and allocate preparation time proportionally. Commerce stream: Accountancy is fully marks-scoring with consistent practice; Economics requires both theory retention and application. Humanities: History and Political Science reward structured answer writing — start practising format early, not in the revision phase.
The three-phase practice schedule
Phase 1 (months 1–3): Cover the syllabus chapter by chapter while solving chapter-end questions and previous year chapter-wise questions simultaneously.
Phase 2 (months 4–5): Begin mixing subjects in practice sessions. Start timed full-subject tests — one per week per subject at minimum.
Phase 3 (final 4–6 weeks): Only sample papers and full previous year papers in exam conditions. No new topics.
Revision strategy that actually sticks
Do not revise everything — revise high-yield sections first. Formula sheets for Maths, Physics, and Chemistry: create these yourself as you study. The act of writing them reinforces memory in a way that downloading PDFs never does.
For theory subjects: structure your answers in bullet-pointed paragraphs with clear headings. CBSE marking schemes reward structured, complete answers — not essay-length prose.
Three mistakes most students make
Skipping diagram practice: marks for diagrams in Physics and Biology are straightforward to secure with 20–30 minutes of dedicated practice per diagram.
Not practising English seriously: Class 12 English is worth 80–100 marks depending on your board. Readable, well-structured writing scores reliably.
Starting previous year paper practice too late: solving full papers should begin in November at the latest, not February.
