Social Studies Exam Writing Tips

How to write History, Civics, Geography, and Economics answers in AP SSC Class 10 Social Studies to maximise your marks in the BSE AP Social Studies exam.

Paper Structure

  • Social Studies is a single 100-mark paper of 3 hours 15 minutes, covering Geography, History, Political Science, and Economics.
  • 4 sections, 33 questions: Section I (12 × 1 mark = 12 M) + Section II (8 × 2 marks = 16 M) + Section III (8 × 4 marks = 32 M) + Section IV (5 × 8 marks = 40 M).
  • Internal choice is available in Section IV only; map work is part of Section IV.
  • Carry a pencil and colour pencils specifically for map work.
  • Always start with Section I to lock in the easy 1-mark answers quickly.

Writing History Answers

  • Always include dates — '1930 Dandi March' scores higher than 'the Salt Satyagraha'.
  • For 'causes' questions: write in numbered points (Cause 1:, Cause 2:) — never one long paragraph.
  • For 8-mark essays (Section IV): use a brief intro (1 sentence) → 5–6 key points → brief conclusion.
  • Include names of leaders, place names, and year — these are the keywords examiners look for.
  • For 'significance' questions: explain short-term AND long-term impact separately.

Writing Civics (Political Science) Answers

  • Power-sharing: always use the Belgium vs Sri Lanka case studies as examples to support your answer.
  • Federalism: mention the three lists (Union, State, Concurrent) and the 73rd/74th Amendments for local government.
  • For 'compare' questions (e.g. Belgium vs Sri Lanka): use a two-column table with at least 3 points.
  • Political Parties: list the functions clearly (contest elections, form government, make policies, opposition).
  • Outcomes of Democracy: discuss accountability, social diversity, and economic outcomes — give a balanced view.

Geography Map Work

  • Use pencil for all outline map work — never use pen on maps.
  • Mark with the correct symbol: circle (●) for cities/towns, triangle (△) for mountains, wavy line (~) for rivers.
  • Write the name of every feature you mark — do not leave any mark unlabelled.
  • For economic geography: mark iron ore deposits with a small square (□), coal with a cross (×), oil with a circle-dot (⊙).
  • Always include a compass direction (N arrow) on your map.

Economics Answer Tips

  • For 'define' questions: give the technical definition first, then one example.
  • For 'distinguish between' questions: use a two-column comparison table.
  • For globalisation/development questions: always mention both positive and negative effects — one-sided answers lose marks.
  • Include data/statistics where possible ('India's GDP has grown at ~7% annually' is better than 'India grows fast').
  • For consumer rights: name the specific right (right to safety, right to information, right to choose) — general answers score less.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing up freedom-struggle dates — 1920 (Non-Cooperation), 1930 (Civil Disobedience/Dandi), 1942 (Quit India).
  • Confusing the four History chapters — Nationalism in Europe, Nationalism in India, Making of a Global World, Age of Industrialisation, Print Culture — keep their themes distinct.
  • Forgetting to mark the Tropic of Cancer on physical map questions — it is almost always asked.
  • Not giving examples with definitions in Geography (e.g., 'black soil found in the Deccan trap region' — not just 'central India').
  • Leaving the map section blank because of time — do maps first if geography is your weaker area.
