Maths IIA — Exam Writing Tips
How to structure your answers in the TGBIE TS Intermediate 2nd Year Maths IIA paper to maximise marks. 75 marks · 3 hours · Sections A, B, C.
🎯
Before You Start
- Spend the first 5 minutes reading all questions in Sections B and C before writing anything
- Circle the 5 SAQs and 5 LAQs you will attempt — based on completeness, not just familiarity
- Start with Section A (all 10 VSAQs compulsory) — these are fastest and build confidence
- Write your Hall Ticket Number and subject code clearly on all pages
⚡
VSAQ Writing (2 marks each)
- Answer in 2–3 lines maximum — no introduction, no padding
- State the direct result or compute the value — show one step of working
- For definition questions: one clear sentence, no examples needed unless asked
- Allocate no more than 2 minutes per VSAQ
📝
SAQ Writing (4 marks each)
- Write the formula or theorem at the start, before substituting values
- Show all intermediate steps — partial marks are awarded at each step
- For proof questions: write 'To prove:', 'Proof:', 'Hence proved'
- Underline or box the final answer
- Allocate 8–10 minutes per SAQ
📋
LAQ Writing (7 marks each)
- Introduce the topic with the relevant theorem or definition (1 sentence)
- Write numbered steps — examiners mark by step, not by impression
- For complex numbers / De Moivre's: write the modulus-argument form first
- For probability problems: write the sample space, events, and formula before computing
- Conclude with a boxed final answer
- Allocate 15–18 minutes per LAQ
✅
General Writing Habits
- Write the question number clearly before each answer
- Use blue or black ink only — no pencil except for diagrams/graphs
- Draw a clean line under each answer before moving to the next
- If you attempt more than required, cross out the extra clearly — examiner marks the first attempt
- Leave 5 minutes at the end to re-check question numbers are correctly mapped
