Maths IIB — Exam Writing Tips
How to structure your answers in the TGBIE TS Intermediate 2nd Year Maths IIB paper — Circles, Conics, Integration, Differential Equations. 75 marks · 3 hours.
🎯
Before You Start
- Read all SAQ and LAQ options in the first 5 minutes — don't commit to order yet
- Identify which integration and conics questions you can complete fully vs. partially
- Start with VSAQs (all compulsory) — they take 2 min each and are guaranteed marks
- Tackle the LAQ you are most confident in first for momentum
⚡
VSAQ Writing (2 marks each)
- For circle questions: write the general equation, identify g, f, c, then answer
- For integration VSAQs: write integral sign, solve, add + C — 2 to 3 lines max
- State only what is asked — no extra working for 2-mark questions
- Allocate ≤ 2 minutes per VSAQ
📐
SAQ Writing — Conics (4 marks each)
- Write the standard form of the conic first before substituting given values
- Clearly distinguish between a, b, c — label them explicitly
- For tangent/normal: derive the equation from the point-slope form
- Box the final equation as the answer
- Allocate 8–10 minutes per SAQ
📋
LAQ Writing — Integration (7 marks each)
- Identify the integration method (substitution, by parts, partial fractions, reduction) — state it at the start
- For integration by parts: write the ILATE selection explicitly
- For partial fractions: write the assumed form, then solve for constants — show all algebra
- For definite integrals using properties: state the property (e.g., ∫f(x)dx = ∫f(a+b-x)dx) before using it
- Write the final numerical answer clearly — examiner will verify it
- Allocate 15–18 minutes per LAQ
📝
Differential Equations Tips
- Classify the DE first: separable, linear, homogeneous — state classification in your answer
- For linear DE: write integrating factor formula explicitly before computing e^∫P dx
- After solving, verify by substituting back if time allows
- Write the general solution with constant C; add initial condition workings if asked
