English Last Minute Revision

Quick-fire revision for BSE Telangana Class 10 English — grammar rules, letter format, essay tips, and exam strategy for the final 24 hours before your paper.

Grammar Quick Recall

  • Passive voice: object of active → subject of passive · 'is/are/was/were + past participle' · by + old subject
  • Reported speech statements: say → 'that' + back-shift tenses (is → was, will → would, can → could)
  • Question tags: positive sentence → negative tag (isn't it? / doesn't she?); negative → positive tag (is it? / does she?)
  • Modals: should/must (obligation), can/could (ability), may/might (possibility), would (polite request)

Formal Letter Format

  • Your address (top right) → Date → Receiver's name and address → Subject: one line → Respected Sir/Madam
  • Para 1: reason for writing · Para 2: details of request/complaint · Para 3: what you want done
  • Closing: Yours faithfully / Yours sincerely → Name and class below signature
  • Never write a formal letter in first-person casual style — maintain formal register throughout

Essay and Extended Writing

  • Title → Introduction: define the topic and state your perspective in 2–3 sentences
  • Body: 2 paragraphs with 2–3 supporting points each — start each paragraph with a topic sentence
  • Use connectives: firstly, moreover, however, as a result, in conclusion — examiners look for this
  • Conclusion: summarise your view and end with a forward-looking or call-to-action sentence

Literature Recall

  • For prose extracts: identify the speaker, the situation, and the significance of the quoted lines
  • For poetry: theme = what the poem is about; mood = how it makes you feel; imagery = what you can picture
  • Character questions: always support with evidence from the text — 'This is shown when...'
  • Do not just retell the story for comprehension questions — answer what is actually asked

Exam Day Tips

  • Paper 2 extended writing: start with your essay or report — writing takes time; do it fresh
  • For grammar questions: if unsure, re-read the sentence with your answer inserted — does it sound natural?
  • Time split: Paper 1 — 25 min reading, 35 min grammar, 60 min writing. Paper 2 — 30 min literature, 90 min writing
  • Proofread your letter and essay before the exam ends — correct tense, spelling, and punctuation
