Grammar Quick Recall
- →Passive voice: object of active → subject of passive · 'is/are/was/were + past participle' · by + old subject
- →Reported speech statements: say → 'that' + back-shift tenses (is → was, will → would, can → could)
- →Question tags: positive sentence → negative tag (isn't it? / doesn't she?); negative → positive tag (is it? / does she?)
- →Modals: should/must (obligation), can/could (ability), may/might (possibility), would (polite request)
Formal Letter Format
- →Your address (top right) → Date → Receiver's name and address → Subject: one line → Respected Sir/Madam

Essay and Extended Writing

- →Use connectives: firstly, moreover, however, as a result, in conclusion — examiners look for this
- →Conclusion: summarise your view and end with a forward-looking or call-to-action sentence
Literature Recall
- →For prose extracts: identify the speaker, the situation, and the significance of the quoted lines
- →For poetry: theme = what the poem is about; mood = how it makes you feel; imagery = what you can picture
- →Character questions: always support with evidence from the text — 'This is shown when...'
- →Do not just retell the story for comprehension questions — answer what is actually asked
Exam Day Tips
- →Paper 2 extended writing: start with your essay or report — writing takes time; do it fresh
- →For grammar questions: if unsure, re-read the sentence with your answer inserted — does it sound natural?
- →Time split: Paper 1 — 25 min reading, 35 min grammar, 60 min writing. Paper 2 — 30 min literature, 90 min writing
