What are Competency Based Questions?
CBSE introduced CBQs to test application and analysis skills — not just rote recall.
Passage + 4–5 Questions
A short passage (real-life or conceptual) is given. 3–4 MCQs and 1 short-answer question follow. Total marks: 4–5. Tests comprehension and application.
Marks: 4–5 per set
Two Statements, Choose A/B/C/D
An Assertion (A) and a Reason (R) are given. Choose whether both are true, and whether R correctly explains A. Tests logical reasoning and conceptual clarity.
Marks: 1 per question
Text / Data / Extract + Questions
Common in Humanities — a historical source, literary extract, map, or data table is provided. Questions test inference, analysis, and interpretation skills.
Marks: 4–5 per set

Read the passage twice
Read the entire passage carefully before attempting any question. The second reading helps you locate specific details quickly when answering.
For A-R: a two-step check
First check if both Assertion and Reason are individually true or false. Only if both are true do you then check whether R correctly explains A.
All answers are in the passage
For case-study and source-based questions, every answer can be derived from the given passage. Do not bring in outside knowledge — read carefully.
