Zoology — Exam Writing Tips

How to write Zoology answers for full marks in TGBIE — tips for Periplaneta, animal diversity, life cycles, and ecology questions.

Periplaneta Americana — LAQ Strategy

  • 1Periplaneta is the most important LAQ topic in Zoology. Prepare each of the 5 systems (digestive, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory) as a separate answer.
  • 2For each system: write a brief intro, draw a large labelled diagram, then describe the structure organ by organ from anterior to posterior.
  • 3Digestive system: always mention Malpighian tubules — they are excretory organs, not digestive, but are located at the junction of mesenteron and ileum.
  • 4Nervous system: distinguish between brain (supra-oesophageal ganglion) and ventral nerve cord. Mention ganglia count (6 in abdomen).
  • 5Ommatidium: draw clearly — corneal lens, crystalline cone, rhabdom, retinal cells, pigment cells. 5-6 label lines minimum.

Animal Diversity Questions

  • 1For 'describe general characters' questions: use a fixed format — habit/habitat, body plan, symmetry, coelom, nutrition, reproduction, examples.
  • 2For 'distinguish between' questions: always write a comparison table with at least 5 points. Two columns: Phylum A vs Phylum B.
  • 3Include scientific names of examples: Pheretima (earthworm), Rana tigrina (frog), Periplaneta americana (cockroach).
  • 4For Chordata: clearly state and explain all 4 fundamental characters before dividing into subgroups.

Life Cycle Diagrams (Parasites)

  • 1For Plasmodium life cycle: draw a circular arrow diagram showing stages in human (liver + RBCs) and stages in mosquito. Label each stage.
  • 2For Ascaris life cycle: draw linear flow chart showing egg → larva → migration path → adult → egg output.
  • 3Always mention the vector/host: Female Anopheles mosquito for Plasmodium; Culex for Wuchereria.
  • 4Include pathogenesis: Plasmodium = malarial fever (rupture of RBCs); Ascaris = abdominal pain, nutritional deficiency.

Ecology Questions

  • 1For food chain and food web: draw arrows in the direction of energy flow (prey → predator, NOT predator → prey).
  • 2For ecological pyramids: draw all 3 types (number, biomass, energy) as separate diagrams showing trophic levels from bottom (producers) to top (apex predators).
  • 3For nutrient cycles: draw as circular diagrams with labelled arrows showing each transformation step and the organisms/processes involved.
  • 4For environmental issues: structure as 'Definition/meaning → Causes → Effects → Control measures'. Four-part structure earns systematic marks.
