Botany — Exam Writing Tips
How to write Botany answers for full marks in TGBIE — tips for diagrams, anatomy, taxonomy, cell biology, and ecology questions.
Diagrams — Most Important Section
- 1Botany diagrams are worth 2–3 marks each in LAQs. Draw them large, clean, and well-labelled — this is where marks are easiest to gain or lose.
- 2For anatomy cross-sections: draw as a wedge/sector (1/4 of the circle), not the full circle. It's faster and easier to label clearly.
- 3For cell diagrams: draw cell wall clearly outside plasma membrane. Label at least 8 organelles with their names on neat pointing lines.
- 4For mitosis: draw all 4 main stages. Label chromosomes, spindle fibres, cell plate at each stage.
- 5For embryo sac: draw the 7-cell, 8-nucleate structure. Label egg apparatus (3 cells), central cell (2 polar nuclei), antipodals (3).
Taxonomy Semi-Technical Descriptions
- 1Structure: Habit, Habitat → Vegetative characters (Root, Stem, Leaf) → Inflorescence → Floral characters (with formula and diagram) → Fruit/Seed → Economic importance.
- 2Floral formula components: ⊕ or %, ♀, K5, C5, A5+5, G(2). Learn the formula for Fabaceae, Solanaceae, Liliaceae by heart.
- 3Always include the floral diagram alongside the formula — it shows the arrangement of floral parts and earns extra marks.
- 4For economic importance: give at least 3 specific uses with named plants (e.g., 'Solanum tuberosum (potato) — food crop').
Cell Biology and Anatomy
- 1For 'describe the structure of [organelle]' questions: write the structure first (membrane system, components), then function.
- 2For anatomy questions: use the format 'from outside to inside' — start with epidermis, move inward layer by layer.
- 3Differentiating dicot vs monocot: always write a comparison table with at least 5 points — this shows comprehensive understanding.
- 4For mitosis/meiosis: use heading for each stage, describe chromosomal events, and draw the diagram for that stage immediately below the description.
Ecology and Reproduction
- 1For adaptation questions: structure as 'Vegetative adaptations', 'Reproductive adaptations', 'Physiological adaptations' — this organisation earns marks.
- 2For reproduction: always mention 'double fertilisation' when writing about angiosperms — it's a key distinguishing feature.
- 3For succession: write the stages in correct sequence with the type of organism at each stage.
- 4Concise definitions at the start of a conceptual answer earn marks: 'Apomixis is the process of seed formation without fertilisation.' Then explain.
