Biological Science Exam Writing Tips
How to write your Biology answers in the BSE Telangana Class 10 exam for full marks — diagram technique, 5-mark theory structure, process questions, genetics, and ecology.
Diagram Questions
4 marks- 1Always draw in pencil — neat freehand is acceptable; compass-drawn circles for globular structures
- 2Draw the diagram first, then add label lines pointing clearly to each part (not crossing each other)
- 3Label names must be written horizontally on the side — never at an angle
- 4Give a title below the diagram: 'Diagram of a Nephron' etc. — this is a marks criterion
- 5If you forget a label name, draw the line and write what the structure does: 'filters blood' is better than leaving blank
5-Mark Theory Questions
5 marks- 1Open with a definition: 'Photosynthesis is the process by which...'
- 2Give the equation or steps: for photosynthesis → write the chemical equation + raw materials + products
- 3Describe the location and conditions: 'This takes place in the chloroplasts in the presence of light and chlorophyll'
- 4Include a significance or application: 'Without photosynthesis, there would be no oxygen for aerobic life'
- 55 marks = 5 distinct points — count your points before moving to the next question
Process Explanation Questions
4–5 marks- 1Use numbered steps for processes like urine formation, reflex arc, or fertilisation — examiner can tick each step
- 2For compare/contrast questions: use a 3-column table (Feature | A | B) — saves time and is clear
- 3For 'why' questions: give the mechanism, not just the answer — 'because the glomerulus has high blood pressure which forces small molecules through'
- 4For digestion/nutrition questions: mention the enzyme, its substrate, and the product at each stage
- 5End process answers with the outcome: 'This results in urine being passed out via the urethra'
Heredity and Genetics
3–5 marks- 1For Mendel's cross: draw the cross-table (Punnett square) neatly — label parents P, gametes G, offspring F1
- 2State the ratio: '3 tall : 1 dwarf = 3:1 phenotypic ratio'
- 3Define terms before using them: 'Dominant trait is the trait expressed even in the presence of a contrasting allele'
- 4For sex determination: draw X and Y chromosomes clearly — show mother contributes X, father contributes X or Y
- 5State the conclusion clearly: 'Therefore, sex of offspring is determined by the father, not the mother'
Ecology and Environment
3–5 marks- 1For food chain questions: producer → primary consumer → secondary consumer → tertiary consumer — always start with a plant
- 2For pollution/environment: define the cause, describe the mechanism, state the effect, then give a solution
- 3Conservation questions: always give both in-situ (protected in natural habitat) and ex-situ (removed from natural habitat) examples
- 4For ozone/greenhouse effect: name the specific gases (CFCs, CO₂, CH₄), not just 'pollutants'
- 5Diagram for food web: show at least 3 food chains with connecting arrows — energy flows one way (→ towards consumers)
